>> reporter: when they pitched their idea. it's not easy, to make it to an evening meeting. >> it's tiring. it can be exhausting but it's a joy. >> reporter: he has cp and seizure disorder. he has found a home at ridge. >> right now i feel it's safe, a wonderful environment to raise a special needs child. the education is great and it'll add more problems to the school. >> reporter: it's a plan to move a grade level of students from west townsend into the building. west townsend opened with much fanfare in the fall of 2010, promised as a solution to severe over crowding in the townsend area but it was designed for 451 students and now has 517.

the county's projections show it could grow beyond 700 with in ten years and that's why moving a class into the building just a few yards away is so pealing to officials, many parent who heard plan don't agree. >> we want school the -- here it is, several years later and you want this it -- you are breaking a promise that was already made. >> reporter: they are worried about the impact of losing classroom space and other resources. the principal said he doesn't believe his school would be negatively affected. >> we would take a look at working together with our staff and looking at what's best for children as part of their safety as well as their instruction. >> reporter: but parents say already have enough to worry about and hope the school system can find another solution. >> i really don't want them to could it. i think they would stay as they are. >> reporter: some of the normal over crowding options aren't

available here. there isn't a lot of space outside of west townsend elementary so they would normally try to bring in the trailers, that's not an option here and moving students to to another building not an option because pretty much all of the schools over crowded. they hope to put in the change this fall so time is running short. they will listen to input from parents from west townsend. abc 2news. >> we have new video out of the airport. we had a small jet veer off the runway at the airport, two people on board this airplane. the jet went off the runway onto the grass. it didn't affect flights leaving or coming. and we had a two alarm fire tonight near the race course. firefighters say this home in

the 5400 block of maple avenue in the intersection of avondale was empty. they saw a lot of smoke on the first and second floor. nobody was hurt and the fire is still under investigation at this hour. >> route 40 at 272 is bakeapple but it was shut down for hours earlier. state police are looking for four people who attempted to steal a john deere tractor. once they were seen, found the jump -- jumped in the back of the truck and found one in the bed they crashed through the gate onto route 40 when they broadsided another car. the man in the bed of the truck was ejected died. the others ran away. >> this could be on any street in baltimore. a car jacked up with someone doing repair job underneath and just before five today a car fell on top of a man. this is in owing's mills. police continue to investigate this accident tonight.

>> update to a story we have been following several days on abc 2news. on thursday we told you about a body found at the bottom of a 20-foot well. tonight police say that man was shot in the head. lenny harris was a community activist, the 53-year-old was found on thursday. he had been admitsing since september. police are working to pinpoint when he died. >> several hundred religious leaders don't give their blessing for same sex marriage and tonight they held a rally to tell the governor what they thought about it. cheryl connor back from annapolis with the latest. big rally. >> reporter: it was. it's the night before the first committee hearing on the same sex martial bill. the governor has provided an exepps for religious leaders but they lined up to protect traditional marriage ♪ [ music ] how great is our god.

♪ [ music ] . >> reporter: tough words put god against the governor. >> today i stand here not as a coward. >> reporter: the words and the signs point to a comment made last week. the first lady said cowards caused the same sex marriage bill to fail a year ago. later she said she regrets her word choice but the message in annapolis went beyond name calling. leaders from many religions believe lawmakers don't have the right to change what they say the bible says about marriage, one man, one woman. even if the bill allows them to opt out. >> never in human history has marriage been defined as between two women, never. who has the right to redefine it? >> reporter: a minister is in the minority here tonight, so much they has put his own life on hold until maryland legalizes same sex marriage. >> i'm in a relationship with a woman. decided we won't legally get married until it's legal

the spotted leopard that was among six caught intaken to the zoom over the weekend he was hurt when a door accidently gate closed on him. workers said they had no choice but to put him down. in health news they are responsible for helping people get healthy. nurses, long hours may be putting them at ring for being overweight. that's it from a new study. more than half of the nurses surveyed were over weight. researchers blamed the lack of sleep saying people are more likely to eat poorly when tired. and doctors over weight are less likely to talk about weight with their patients. researchers at john hopkins looked at hundreds of primary care doctors and found only 18% of over weight doctors talked about losing weight with patients. about 30% maintaining a healthy weight talked about weight loss. >> let's talk act the consumer

a new study estimates hotels expected to collect nearly a record high $1.8 billion from extra fees this year, that's up 100 million from last year. >> people are mad about the situation. >> reporter: ian ford said he has seen fees two star to five star, there are restocking fees ranges five to $15 for just opening the mini bar, not even taking anything. a belman charge even if you carry your own bags, a charge foration the air conditioner and a charge per coffee c aps ule. 25 to $125 if you ÷xwant luxury linen. >> passing down the cost, sometimes it's more expensive but they have to coast overhead. >> reporter: the hotel and lodging association said fees

are increation because the hotel industry has more properties and rooms available than ever before. hotels sometimes have to pay a third party to run the gym, operate the pool, provide internet. >> we like to give away as much as possible but economics are that somebody has to pay for it. >> reporter: experts say if you want to avoid the fees call the hotel when you reserve a room and ask what they charge extra for or check the hotel website. also some loyalty programs give breaks and if you don't like a fee try negotiating and say lue stay somewhere else if they don't budge. >> hotels charge for thing that used to be free because they can. the consumer hasn't complained yet. >> because they can. that was charlie reporting. make sure you check on your bill carefully at check out. it's easier to dispute when you are still at the hotel. that's what karen did and got

above freezing in baltimore, at freezing in york. you can see most of the area 30s to near 40. chilly but not frigid by january standards. marking the coolest day of the week. the mid40s we have for highs, we will add some 15 to 20- degrees for these, both tomorrow and again on wednesday. we have a huge surge of warm air and the air right dry out there. that will aid in a rapid warm up tomorrow because the very dry air heats and cools more quickly and so tomorrow we have a south breeze kicking n we will have widespread sun and that means highs even on the last day of january in the low 60s. little further south we could push toward the mid60s in spots like say davidsonville u you will probably be cool america lake shore. across the area, pretty quiet on the range. what little cloud cover you can see a few showers, maybe as

close as upstate new york, even in northern new jersey. we are just not seeing much. i think as we go in to the day tomorrow we will clear it out more. the clouds on the bottom edge a disturbance off to the north and after this passes toward daybreak we will be set for widespread sun. huge dome of high pressure. we have seen this before. however one difference here, there is a lot of much warmer air just opponent the back side of this high. as this drifts toward the beaches we will get in to the return flow on the back side of this and you can see tonight fair in the mid50s. places like memphis and nashville. the warmer air headed our way and precipitation wise not much headed our way. we are crystal clear through the day and as we go from tomorrow night into wednesday, the chance for a few showers but still a very mild day in the low to mid60s as most of the rain looks to pass just south of us and maybe a few showers lingering late as early thursday morning but the bulk of that looks like it'll pass
